Traverse Calculation
Compute traverse latitudes, departures, coordinates, closure, precision and adjusted coordinates for a surveying traverse.
Traverse Observations
Enter the starting coordinates and each observed whole-circle bearing and distance. Bearings are measured clockwise from North.
Starting Coordinate
Traverse Settings
The standard survey convention is a whole-circle bearing from 0° to <360°, measured clockwise from North.
Observed Traverse Lines
| Line | Point / To | Bearing | Distance | Remove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | P2 | |||
| 2 | P3 | |||
| 3 | P4 | |||
| 4 | P1 |
For a closed traverse, the final computed coordinate should return to the starting coordinate. The tool reports the actual closure error and does not silently force the observations to close.
Traverse Adjustment
First calculate the observed traverse above. Then apply a standard proportional correction method to the latitude and departure misclosures.
Adjustment Method
Bowditch distributes latitude and departure corrections in proportion to line length. Transit Rule distributes each component in proportion to the absolute sum of the corresponding observed latitudes or departures.
Traverse reference
Sign convention: North latitude and East departure are positive; South latitude and West departure are negative. Coordinates are accumulated from the supplied starting coordinate.
